An RFID thermometer to streamline temperature control at the entrance
How to facilitate temperature measurement at the inlet
Powercast Corporation has designed an innovative RFID system for temperature scanning, powered by wireless mode, to facilitate and speed up inbound operations at companies. The company, world-renowned for over-the-air wireless solutions using radio frequencies, has launched a temperature scanning device based on an RFID reader and a TV monitor. It is a customized key fob that every company employee can easily carry with them and is able to recharge in a short time when held near an RFID reader. The device takes advantage of Powercast power harvesting technology. Through the use of a remote control, employees’ forehead conditions are precisely detected, providing completely reliable data on the body’s thermal degrees. In this way, efficient triage occurs at the entrance of the company, with free access only to personnel who are in good health, through the analysis of the temperature that appears on the monitor. In the case of large companies, the opportunity to use multiple readers is also offered, so that a contact tracking record is kept. Following exposure to coronavirus, specific time-stamped news items are automatically collected by the readers to allow all potentially at-risk employees to be informed.
Usefulness of thermal scanning using RFID devices
In anticipation of the gradual reopening of all work activities, it was found that more than 58 percent of employers plan to conduct health screenings or tests, first checking body temperature and then any symptoms. This new system offers many advantages over traditional systems in that it avoids the use of instruments such as hand-held thermoscanners, which are prone to contamination, as well as pens and pads of paper to record data. It is clear that the top priority of anyone running a business with employees becomes to ensure maximum safety for employees, both for their protection and overall performance. One of the main advantages of the system relates to the use of over-the-air wireless technology, which can harness RF energy from PowerSpot or Powercast’s Powercaster RF transmitters.
System operation
The technology behind the system is a Powerharvester receiver microchip, which is responsible for automatically collecting RF when placed within range of an RF power source. This power source is then converted to direct current to enable the application to operate. Endowed with great effectiveness and efficiency, the microchip can detect power from even small amounts of RF. Each battery-free remote control contains an RFID chip, a Powercast Powerharvester receiver, a thermal sensor, and an MCU microcontroller. It is sufficient for the employee to keep his or her device in a specific power supply area equipped with an RFID reader antenna as well as a TV screen. After storing sufficient energy, the remote control turns on the sensor. The sensed thermal data is sent to the RFID reader so that all useful information can be displayed on the TV screen.
A green or red light then indicates the possibility or prohibition of access. The device is designed for both its refined performance and minimal power consumption. Finally, for its ability to incorporate and convert data into a structure as small as a remote control. Thanks to the designers’ creativity, the device was made as a small keychain equipped with temperature scanning; an object that is handy, practical, and extremely accurate.
